As you might guess, the number-one dental problem among preschoolers is tooth decay.
Did you know that cavities are a common issue among Filipino preschoolers? Here’s a quick rundown:
- By age 2, 1 in 10 kids already has cavities.
- At age 3, about 28% of children have cavities.
- And by age 5, nearly half of kids have cavities.
Parents might think cavities in baby teeth aren’t a big deal, but they can affect permanent teeth and cause future problems.
Here’s how to keep your child’s teeth healthy:
Teach Good Habits: Help your child brush their teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Supervise until they’re about 6-8 years old.
Use the Right Toothpaste: For kids under 3, a smear of toothpaste the size of a rice grain is enough. At age 3, a pea-sized amount is okay.
Brushing Technique: It doesn’t matter if you brush up and down or in circles. What matters is cleaning each tooth well, especially the hidden ones.
Watch the Sugar: Sugary foods and drinks can lead to cavities. Encourage brushing after sweets and avoid letting your child sip sugary drinks for too long.
Regular Checkups: Take your child for dental checkups by age 1. The dentist will ensure everything is developing well and provide guidance on oral hygiene. By following these tips, you can help your child maintain good dental health and prevent future issues.
